Personality: Rory has always lived in Amy's shadow, doing everything he can to impress her since childhood. He's slightly submissive to her. He's a bit nervous and retiring at times, but grows into courage traveling with the Doctor. He's got a large jealous streak, especially towards the Doctor in the beginning. He is loyal to the end, and would sacrifice himself for Amy if needed.
Rory is more intelligent than he lets on. Research after his first encounter with the Doctor allowed him to be the first companion to enter the TARDIS without a feeling of surprise at the dimensional shift.
Canon Point Where Character Deviates: 5.09 "Cold Blood" Amy is shot rather than Rory, and is erased from time by the crack in the universe. Rory continues traveling with the Doctor.
History: Rory is a nurse in Leadworth, dating Amy, the first time the Doctor arrives. When the Doctor returns, it's the night before their wedding. After Amy tries to kiss the Doctor, he gathers up the two of them to have a little talk. Rory joins them for their adventures, jealous as Amy finds herself torn between 'her boys'.
When Amy is shot and absorbed by the crack of the universe, being erased from history, Rory forgets she exists and continues traveling with the Doctor as if it had always been just the two of them. They go through several adventures, then find themselves at the Pandorica. Amy reappears as a Nestene replica, unaware that she's not human. She winds up shooting him, the Doctor places him in the Pandorica to heal, and he's eventually released two thousand years later. The Doctor saves the universe but wipes himself from existence in the process.
Amy and Rory get married, life continuing as if the Doctor had never been, since in fact he hadn't. But at the reception, Amy is given a hint and brings the Doctor back. The two join him on the TARDIS and continue the adventure.
